AACC Board Approves Competencies for Community College Leaders
The Leading Forward project is proud to announce that on April 9,
2005, the AACC Board of Directors unanimously approved the
Competencies for Community College Leaders. This
culminates 1 ½ years of work of AACC and a host of constituent
groups, including community college leaders, AACC affiliate
council members, university leaders, and others. AACC is indebted
to all for their help, thoughtfulness, and passion about community
college leadership.
The field of community college leadership development is encouraged
to use Competencies for Community College Leaders. The Competencies
for Community College Leaders can help community college personnel
chart their individual leadership development as well as assist
program planners in designing curricula. Human resource systems can
also use the competencies in performance appraisal as well as
professional development systems. Please credit AACC and share your
stories with Nan Ottenritter, Leading Forward Manager, at

We've held a series of meetings tweaking the competencies for
effective community college leaders. That has resulted in an
on-line survey being sent to all summit participants the first
week of December. Participants are asked to respond by Dec. 17.
Thanks to all, in advance, for your best thinking!
At our meetings we've also talked more extensively about what a
national framework to advance community college leadership would
look like. We've reviewed the thinking from the summits and are
becoming more concrete with our plans. We've also had fun with the
name. The working title is the the "Leadership Commons," having
evolved from the "Big Enchilada" to the "Leadership Development
Exchange" to the current title.
The Leadership Commons a big, rich, and complicated creation in the
making. We remain grateful to Kellogg for funding this work and to
all of you who have participated in one way or another. 'stay tuned!

AACC is pleased to announce the receipt of the report, A
Qualitative Analysis of Community College Leadership from the
Leading Forward Summits, from Eric Vincent of ACT. Many summit
participants met Vincent at Leading Forward’s four leadership
summits held from November 2003 to March 2004. Over 150 experts from
the community college world met to discuss leadership and leadership
development, review their institutions’ leadership offerings, and
brainstorm ideas for a national framework to advance leadership in
community colleges.

the report (Adobe PDF).
AACC will spend the months of September and October reviewing the
analysis by: 1) making it "community college-friendly" and 2)
gleaning from it recommendations for a Community College Leadership
Development Exchange to be housed at AACC.
Again, our thanks to all who have been involved in the Leading
Forward project to date. We're at an exciting point of taking the
tremendous amount of data that surfaced during the summits and using
it to create a competency framework and plan for AACC's role in the
field of community college leadership.
