The Knowledge Net: A Report of the New Expeditions
Initiative
The W.K. Kellogg-funded New Expeditions
project set a vision and strategic direction for the nation's
community colleges in the first part of the new millenium. The
following recommendations to advance community college leadership
were made:
Community colleges should assess their community’s needs and
assets and implement appropriate programs to cultivate and enhance
current and future community leaders.
Community colleges must create a positive, professional work
environment that values all personnel regardless of classification.
Community colleges should seek and hire diverse and competent
faculty and staff in every part of the institution.
Community colleges should allocate at least 2 percent of their
annual operating budgets to the professional development and training
of their personnel.
Community colleges must prepare more people for higher education
leadership roles and strive for more diversity in all leadership
positions.
Universities should initiate or strengthen leadership programs
that will prepare a new generation of community college leaders.
Community colleges should recognize the importance of physical and
mental health in the learning, retention, productivity, and well-being
of all persons, and should respond with programming, policies, and
services to promote a healthful environment for learning.
Trustees and the college’s chief executive officer must act as a
leadership team and respect their differing leadership roles.
From April 1998 to January 2000 the
American Association of Community Colleges (AACC ) and the
Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) drew upon their
collective capacity as information gatherers and conveners, engaging
board members, advisory commissions, committees, affiliated
councils, and partners in broad discussions and reflection.
The project: 1) Documented the impact
of Building Communities, the report of the Commission on
the Future of Community Colleges; 2) Collected information through
special issue papers, public hearings, focus groups, and field
comments; 3) Analyzed findings and made recommendations; 4) Reported
findings through print, electronic, and other media; and 5)
Showcased examples of possible implementation approaches. For the
